Hazardous or Not?

to drink (or even get a taste when swimming)?

Enteroccoccus, also called Fecal Streptococcus.  Photo is of petri dish, showing colonies of microbacteria growing on substrate (little blue dots).  May be of concern in swimming waters, as well as any water you might drink.

Engines running rough?
Contaminated fuel or something else?
Analysis may save you needless repairs.

What is in the dirt around it from leaks or spills?

WHAT CAN ENVIROCOMPLIANCE ANALYZE AND TEST FOR YOU?

Purity, meeting product specifications, definition of unknown components, etc., are potential issues that may be resolved by using an independent testing laboratory.  Expertise in the methods, specialized equipment for compliance with standard testing protocols, and timely results are included in the capabilities of EnviroCompliance Laboratories, Inc.

Some typical testing categories routinely conducted for our clients are introduced on this page.

Please call us now and talk with one of our professionals or the Laboratory Director, Greg Hudson, for more detailed technical information.

Is my wastewater hazardous
or non-hazardous?

WASTEWATER TESTING

Wastewater, including sewage, discharge from process and industrial facilities, gray water, de-icing runoff, and most any type of water not generally suitable for release into the environment must be subjected to some form of purification by processing.  The discharge water must be subjected to periodic testing in accord with the conditions of the permit(s) issued for each particular source.

Environmental compliance with a wide range of complex and updated regulations issued by federal, state, regional, and local authorities is a major challenge for any wastewater PRP (Principal Responsible Party).   Appropriate, timely and accurate testing of wastewater, conducted in accord with stringent standards and methods, is necessary for conformance with the regulatory expectations of the DMR (Discharge Monitoring Report) issued by the PRP.

Diligent wastewater discharge permit holders (permittees) have used the independent chemical testing resources and capability of EnviroCompliance Laboratories (including its acquired laboratories, one of which was founded in1959) to assure the integrity of the results they post in their DMR.

Is my drinking water safe?

DRINKING WATER TESTING

Concerns about the purity of drinking water may develop over time, and any time there is a change associated with the source.

Typical drinking water sources are wells, springs, bottlers and treated water distribution systems.  Power outages due to storms or fire may cause concern about water treatment operations and the safety of the water.

When in doubt, the usual action is to first boil what you plan to consume, and get samples tested immediately by a qualified regional testing laboratory.

     TIP:
If you are a well owner, a wealth of information is available at:
www.wellowner.org.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides extensive information and regulations to guide your actions.  Microbiological analysis is conducted by laboratories, including EnviroCompliance Laboratories, to identify bacteria and other contaminants, and provide the identification of the amount and types of trace chemicals that are of concern.  The wide variety of potential contaminants means that the testing laboratory must have a broad and diverse range of equipment, personnel capabilities, and methodologies.

The frequency and timing of water testing is guided by the EPA and prudence:  if there is a change or a concern about water purity, testing may be a wise action -- even if it is not mandated by regulations.

Is my fuel any good?

PETROLEUM AND FUEL PRODUCTS TESTING

Petroleum and fuel products take many forms:  gasoline, fuel oil, diesel, coal, paint thinner, pellet fuels, etc.  Even the broad range of plastics, chemicals and other products based on petroleum may be subjected to testing for a variety of reasons.

Heat value of the source material, and the composition of exhausts and residue after combustion, is generally the most sought data from analysis and testing.  This may be expressed as BTU/pound, BTU/gallon, ash, or in other technical terms suitable for the specific material tested.

The presence of water in fuel products also may be a concern.  Interestingly, even the presence of bacteria or fungus may need to be determined.

Is my waste hazardous or non-hazardous?

SYNTHETIC ORGANIC CHEMICALS TESTING

Creative chemists have solved human needs in most every arena by complexing many elements into a wide range of synthetic materials using the basic building blocks of carbon, phosphorus, halogens and combinations of the three.

Herbicides, pesticides, detergents, paints, pharmaceutical drugs, hydrocarbons, synthetic fibers, plastics, petrochemicals, hydrocarbons, perfumes, dyes, toiletries, polymers, etc.  The list goes on almost forever!

For example, organo-phosphorous, organo-chlorine and other complex chemicals are used in a wide variety of applications.  Testing of these materials, and determinations of their presence, for example in well or run-off water, is a realm of analysis that is within the service mix of EnviroCompliance Laboratories, Inc.

Sophisticated analytical testing methodologies have been developed, and development is an ongoing challenge for testing laboratories.

What else should I be concerned about?

SPECIALIZED TESTING NEEDS

Uranium, radon and other radiological materials, as well as a wide range of other materials present in soils can be of concern, particularly in real estate transactions.

Trace metals such as chromium, mercury, lead, metalloids like arsenic can be harmful in your mixed solid/liquid waste, depending on their chemical form.

Call us at 804-550-3971 to confirm our ability to analyze for your unusual chemical concerns.

The breadth and depth of the experience, equipment, and personnel at EnviroCompliance Laboratories, Inc., allows a quality response to the needs of hundreds of clients across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
